Chichester
Jazz Club was formed in 1991. Outgrowing its earlier
venues, it is now based at the spacious Pallant
Suite in South Pallant near the city centre (Click here for map) where
it features top-quality musicians in a nightclub-style
atmosphere.
The Suite includes an extended
stage, recently acquired upright piano, special
lighting, first class sound, a comfortable auditorium
and seating at candlelit tables. A bar is open throughout
the evening serving drinks at sensible prices. Coffee
is available at the interval. All facilities are
on the ground floor. There is wheelchair access
and toilet facilities for the disabled are provided.
There are two nearby car parks
(free parking after 5pm) and the main bus and rail
stations are within walking distance.
The club’s continuing growth means that
it can now offer an 10-month season running from October to July,
with regular monthly meetings normally on the third Friday,
complemented by additional dates, making a 16-gig programme
in total. Keep an eye on the programme,
CJC website and local press for details.
To reinforce its policy of presenting
a wide range of jazz styles, the club has implemented
a programme of members’ surveys to help understand
their likes and preferences and plans to use the
results to shape future programmes.
Since 2003, Chichester Jazz Club
has worked in close collaboration with the Chichester
College Jazz Department to present concerts featuring
students in small group and big band formats.
The club always looks for other ways to
provide extra value to its members. These have included organised
trips to nearby jazz venues, specially negotiated price concessions
for local jazz concerts organised by other promoters and jazz cruises
on the Chichester Canal. Most significantly, the Chichester
Jazz Festival – – ‘Jazz
in The City’ which was first held in September 2006 -
features an outstanding array of bands and musicians in various
venues throughout the city.
