In collaboration with Chichester City Council, on the first weekend of September 2006, Chichester Jazz Club
was delighted to bring to Chichester the city’s first jazz festival of its kind - Jazz in the City.
The objective was to make this ground-breaking jazz festival a repeatable annual event of quality and
substance and help put back jazz on the local map.
Over the years, Chichester had enjoyed other jazz festivals but never one quite like this. Jazz in the
City was modelled on the successful formula used by other famous UK jazz festivals and it included a jazz
master-class, canal jazz cruises, a stroller programme, marching band, Jazz @ The Waterside, a set of Fringe
events as well as major headline artists.
The programme was structured to present jazz in its many varieties as well as provide a performance
opportunity for local student, amateur and semi-professional musicians. Artists appearing included Zoë
Schwarz and Rob Koral Duo, George’s Regis Jazz Band, Bobby Wellins Quartet, Kaz Simmons Duo, Cuff Billett’s
New Europa Jazz Band, Jazz Gitanes Duo, Luis D’Agostino Trio, PD3 with Dick Pearce, Mike Piggott Quartet,
Alan Barnes Quintet featuring vocalist Liz Fletcher and a second dose from Alan with his jazz master-class.
As well as music around The Waterside at the Canal Basin and aboard Chichester Canal’s ‘Richmond’, venues
used included St John’s Chapel, Vicar’s Hall, Edes House, St Paul’s Church and New Park Jazz Hall.
The Fringe programme took in The Fountain, Nags Head, Ship Hotel and Pizza Express.
The festival was supported by major sponsors Jensen and Chichester Bedroom Centre,
lottery grant funding from Awards for All and the self-financing Chichester Deputy Mayor’s Fund.
