It might have been a tale of two halves but the theme common to the whole evening was the quality of the music and the musicians playing it. Mark Crooks took the swing era of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw to bring his clarinet playing to the fore in the first set, while in the second it was his tenor saxophone and the inspiration of the influential Lester Young.
Mark was playing at the top of his game and with support from one of the finest rhythm sections on the UK jazz circuit, the evening was a delight for lovers of melodic, lyrical and tasteful jazz. The hall was packed and at the end the audience was clamouring for an early return of the Mark Crooks Quartet.
Line-Up: Mark Crooks – clarinet and tenor saxophone, John Pearce – piano, Dave Green – bass, Steve Brown – drums.
