Fans of Duke Ellington (and surely, who isn’t?) were treated to an exceptional performance of the great composer, musician and bandleader’s work interpreted by the Josh Kemp Quartet.
Josh’s tenor was to the fore with its warm, mellow tone and sensitive styling and was more than ably supported with fine work from a rhythm section where pianist Rob Barron excelled.
Part-way through a UK tour showcasing the music of The Duke, and with a Pizza Express, Soho CD launch gig coming soon to herald the release of a commemorative CD early next year, Josh is taking his project seriously.
Although the night was a dedicated ‘Tribute to Ellington’, the band found space to play a Kemp original ‘Spin’, which had the audience nodding appreciatively to its bluesy, soulful feel. An evening for everyone!
Line-up: Josh Kemp - tenor saxophone, Rob Barron - piano, Arnie Somogyi - bass, Tim Giles - piano.
