An expectant 100-strong audience were thrilled by the new season's opening performance from Club Tabou, playing in the evocative gypsy jazz tradition of the Hot Club of France. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of guitarist Django Reinhardt, the band were faithful to the origins of their style of music and easily held the attention of an audience captivated by the energy and excitement generated by the band. The line up of clarinet (doubling with soprano sax), rhythm and lead guitars, and double bass differentiated them from other bands playing in that genre. However, Django's later bands often featured clarinet rather than violin and the instrumentation certainly suited some of the more Latin-based numbers. For the Club, this was a thrilling start to what promises to be the most ambitious season yet and a happy audience went home delighted at the prospect of a winter of the very best of live jazz.
