Bands at jazz clubs are mostly ‘regular bands’ that have played together many times, often for years or even decades. Not tonight at CJC! The band, with the snappy title of ‘The Pete Godfrey Trio with Special Guests Cuff Billett and Amy Roberts’ brings together for the first time:
Pianist Pete Godfrey, who has been for many years a popular and regular visitor to CJC, leading rhythm sections for many top musicians, including the late and
much-missed Danny Moss. Best known for his work in mainstream jazz Pete has also played with New Orleans and Dixieland musicians. He has chosen bassist Godfrey Shepherd and drummer Alex Eberhard, frequent colleagues and both highly experienced and flexible musicians, to complete the rhythm section.
Cuff Billett still lives up to his reputation as one of the finest New Orleans trumpeters the UK has produced. His New Europa Jazz Band has made many successful appearances in Chichester, both at the club and at the first JITC in 2006. Unlike most of his counterparts Cuff has also play mainstream jazz from time to time.
Amy Roberts first played at CJC in July 2006, making a very positive impression on clarinet and alto sax with the Bovey Tracey Drinking Orchestra. Now, at the age of 19, she has established a reputation far beyond her native Cornwall, mainly as a soloist on alto sax and clarinet. About to enter her second year as a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she is studying classical flute, Amy also manages to make guest appearances with several bands and occasionally to lead her own bands in both the traditional and mainstream genres.
The band’s music will consist of jazz ranging from New Orleans to Mainstream – ‘mainly mainstream’ has been the most frequent description of their music. An intriguing prospect and highly recommended!
All meetings start at 7.45pm - doors open at 6.30pm
