American vocalist Marlene VerPlanck is one of the finest interpreters of the music of the great songwriters. To quote from a review by Sheila Tracy (of Big Band Special fame) of Marlene’s March 2010 appearance at The Pizza On The Park:
‘So what is it that separates VerPlanck from many of today’s other excellent vocalists?
First and foremost, her diction, combined with an intimacy with her audience which can only be described as mesmeric, Secondly the choice of material, which includes a collection of the less familiar works of Gershwin, Porter and Berlin, plus a sprinkling of relatively new songs, including those penned by her late husband, Billy VerPlanck, also responsible for all her arrangements’.
It took many years to achieve this eminence. Her early professional work included being the anonymous musical voice behind radio and television commercials as well as appearing with big bands. It was during a short stint with the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra that she met her future husband, musician-arranger Billy VerPlanck. In time Marlene became one of the busiest studio singers, backing vocalists of the calibre of Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme. It was not until the 1970s that she emerged as a leading solo performer, receiving enormous critical acclaim for her appearances in clubs, in major venues such as Carnegie Hall, and on nationwide TV shows.
Since her husband Billy’s death in 2009 Marlene continues to perform throughout North America and make annual visits to the UK.
The John Pearce Trio, who supported Marlene magnificently on her 2010 tour, are planned to accompany Marlene at CJC. With John on piano, will be Paul Morgan - bass and Bobby Worth - drums.
