Phil Brown describes his Swingtet’s biggest influence as the small swing band music of the 1950s and 1960s, principally Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Buck Clayton. However, their repertoire extends much further, with tunes from the American Songbook and music more normally associated with Dixieland jazz bands, as well as modern jazz classics by the likes of Horace Silver and Nat Adderley.
On their 2009 debut at CJC this brand of music attracted a large audience, whose enthusiasm for the quality of the arrangements and musicianship was matched by the band’s own obvious enjoyment of the music.
