Alan Barnes describes how he 'received one day a large envelope containing a raft of music by tenor saxophnist Simon Spillett, a player I'd met but never heard'. Soon, Alan, 'playing through tune after tune realised...this was the real thing'.
A few years later, Alan proved his assessment to be correct when his own Woodville label released Simon's album 'Introducing Simon Spillett'. Jazz awards such as the BBC's Rising Star of the Year and the 2011 British Jazz Award for Tenor Saxophone further endorse Simon's credentials.
Discussing tonight's music, Simon re-stated his belief: 'Jazz should swing and move its audience. The band will evoke the Golden Age of jazz from the 1950s and '60s, with choice tunes and a self-evident world class rhythm section, of Ted Beament - piano, Dave Green - bass and Bobby Worth - drums'
Dave Green replacing Geoff Gascoyne on bass is a change to the published programme.
