Mark Crooks’ set will be a ‘tale of two halves’ The first part of the evening will feature his fluid clarinet playing and will be devoted to his popular tribute to the King of Swing, Benny Goodman, and to the ground-breaking Artie Shaw. Goodman’s ‘Stompin’ At The Savoy’ and Shaw’s ‘Begin The Beguine’ are master works in the history of jazz.
After the break, Mark will demonstrate his versatility on tenor sax and explore the style and themes made famous by the enormously influential Lester Young. Young’s gorgeously melodic solos were heard on such hits as ‘Lady Be Good’,
‘Tickletoe’, ‘Lester Leaps In’, ‘You’re Driving Me Crazy’, ‘I Didn’t Know What Time It Was’, etc. His work with the Count Basie Orchestra and with Billie Holiday is the stuff of legend!
We can expect Mark to add his inventiveness to familiar classics and do more than justice to these Jazz Greats.
